Did pro gay marriage activists agree to have a vote on the issue?

You Are Dry Shaving Me asked:

They obvioulsy did and never expected the outcome in California. Now that marriage is banned they are crying foul. Maybe they should listen to the people and how we define marriage as a society.

They remind me of people that bet on a ‘guaranteed’ winner in sports. When that team loses, they refuse to pay.

Marriage was never a civil right, and never will be.

Marriage was never a civil right? So you’re suggesting that people have to request permission from… who, exactly? to get married.

That’s quite ignorant. Marriage, as illustrated by archaeology, predates both government and religion. Neither have any legitimate authority over it.

I don’t think pro-gay marriage activists ever agreed to wording in Prop 8 or sending such a biased proposal for a vote. People should never abandoned righteous and just views just because they are not popular.

In a technical sense, I suppose, since they are citizens of their states and state laws allow initiative processes.

But no, they didn’t say sure, let’s put this to a vote.

And the Supreme Court of California disagrees with you about marriage being a civil right. I’m just sayin’…

“Maybe they should listen to the people and how we define marriage as a society.”

Just remember you said that when California votes the other way.

The national trend is clearly towards acceptance.
You can see that throughout society.
Gay marriage will be voted legal by the public.
    What will you say then?

No they didn’t agree to vote on the issue. The religious nuts had enough signatures to have it a ballot issue.

There are no laws defining marriage as union between only a man and a woman, therefore stopping people from a secular procedure would be a violation of rights.

No, the facts are that gay marriage activists wanted to be legally able to enter into gay marriages. There was no agreement to bring it to a vote. The vote was spurred primarily by religious activists distributing petitions to get enough signatures to get the matter on the ballot. Now it will take a challenge in the California Supreme Court to get the matter decided as to Constitutionality

I think it’s arrogant that people think they have the right to VOTE on whether 2 people should be allowed to get married.

When was the vote on allowing heterosexual marriages?

Can I vote on whether my neighbor should get married? I don’t like her boyfriend. He’s a jerk.

If society gets to vote on marriage, I say we should vote on them ALL, or none.
